Cruises
Cruise travel has seen an enormous increase in activity over the
last 5 years, Not only have the number of cruisers increased, so have the options--from a 1 day cruise to nowhere
to a 121 day cruise around the world (and everywhere in between). From the far flung reaches of Alaska to the depth
of Antarctica (with, of course, the Caribbean, Europe, most of Asia, Mexico, Hawaii and more in between!) There
are cruises for just about every lifestyle, activity and interest imaginable, yet unbelievably over 80% of Americans
and Canadians have never set foot on a cruise liner.
How can I afford a cruise? Probably the most common lament heard from folks contemplating their first
cruise. With increased popularity around cruising, prices have become very competitive. Plus, remember, the price
you pay for your 3, 4, 7, or 8+ day cruise includes all of your meals, coffee, tea and juices, entertainment (except
gambling!) and the opportunity to visit different ports of call. When you look at the cost of a cruise from this
perspective, it becomes much more attractive--and affordable.
Will I hate it or love it? This may be another
question keeping many first time cruisers from sailing off into the sunset. A lot here has to do with the selection
of the right cruise for you. With so much variety available, its important to pick a cruise that matches your own
desires as closely as possible. For example, if your primary goal is rest and relaxation, a 3 day cruise in mid-summer
is probably not the way to go--chances are good that the ship will be heavily populated by partiers, children,
or both. By the same token, if you are in the mood for a party experience, the longer (10 days or more) cruises
are not a good bet. Younger (meaning, say, under the age of 45) "party animals" may find it difficult
to be away from work longer than a week and thus are forced to avoid the longer cruises. As a whole, the ship board
passengers on these longer cruises is generally an older (and more sedate) crowd. For information on picking the
right cruise for you, see choosing
a cruise.
What about being bored? This question is only asked by those who have never cruised. Probably the
most common comment we have heard from those who are unsure about cruising is "I don't think I'd be able to
stay cooped up in a ship for 7 days!" There are 2 fallacies in the above comment. First, you won't be cooped
up for 7 days--on a cruise of that length, you will likely be visiting anywhere from 1 to 5 ports--you will have
ample time to get off the ship. Second, even if you have chosen a more "sedate" cruise, there will still
be plenty (meaning more than you can take part in) of onboard activities that will likely leave boredom a long
ago memory. Diversions ranging from scavenger hunts to wine tastings to galley and bridge tours will give you plenty
to occupy your time.
