Packing Tips

If you are not familiar with it, check the weather at your destination. It's frustrating (and expensive) to arrive expecting 80 degrees and balmy and find rain and a 45 degree cold snap.

Make a packing list and check items off as you add them to your cases. It's simple and can save a lot of hassle.

Pack co-ordinating outfits. You'll get more use out of less clothing. Plan your outfits in advance--you'll pack less.

Pack "sample" sizes of shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste, shaving cream, deodorant, etc. The total savings in space and weight is considerable, and you'll use just what you need.

Get the best luggage you can possibly afford. Get the bags as "adaptable" as possible--you'll be able to take less total bags. The new lightweight and high strength bags are the best. eBags.com has a great selection and free shipping is available.

Bring anything disposable that you can (within environmental conscious parameters). In all likelihood, you will be buying things on your trip--when you dispose of the items that you've brought you make room for what you've bought.

Lay everything out before you pack. Check everything against your packing list before you put things in the bags. It's a lot less aggravating than digging through the luggage to verify that you've packed a certain item.

If you are carrying more than 1 bag, spread the heavy items throughout the luggage. Your arms will appreciate your thoughtfullness later.

As you are leaving, make sure that you have the absolute essentials. These should be in your carry-on:

  • Medicines | Eyeglasses | Any items required for a disability
  • Cash or traveller's checks | Credit Cards | Passports/Visas
  • Proof of insurances (auto, health, etc.) | ANY item that could stop or severely limit your trip.

If you forget any of these items, it could destroy your trip. Anything else, if necessary, can be purchased. In addition, since you are carrying them with you, even if all your bags are lost or delayed your trip can continue.
